Multistage breakdown orifices

Breakdown orifices in the bypass of a minimum flow valve ensure a minimum flow rate in a centrifugal pump, which is required to prevent the pump from overheating. To do this, the minimum flow valve opens and directs the excess volume flow to the return via a throttle. The multi-stage throttle reduces the pressure to atmospheric level by gradually transforming the pressure energy into heat.
